In 1937, after the arrest of her parents, she was sent to the Central Reception Distribution Center, from where she ended up in an orphanage in Smolensk. Since 1938 she was raised by her grandmother in Leningrad. In 1941 she was evacuated to Krasnoyarsk and worked at a factory. She graduated from the history department of Leningrad University, taught at a technical school, then worked as a planner at the LOMO plant.
