Born in St. Petersburg, in the family of a Greek citizen Anastas Panaioti. The family had four sons and one daughter. The eldest sons Mikhail and Leonid were architects, the younger Konstantin was a student at the Leningrad Industrial Construction Institute. After Leonid's arrest in 1938. the entire family was deported to Greece, except for the sister, who married a military man and went with him to the Far East.
