The author of the first Soviet I-1 fighter (1923), the I-3 fighter and the U-2 training aircraft (1927), the R-5 reconnaissance aircraft (1929). Arrested on 10/24/1929 on charges of participating in a wrecking organization, sentenced (without trial) to VMN. In 1929 appointed chief. designer of the Special Design Bureau of the OGPU in the Butyrka prison. In 1930 transferred, along with other imprisoned aircraft designers, to the new Central Design Bureau, organized in the hangar of the Moscow Plant No. 39, Art. design engineer. Sentenced by a resolution of the KOGPU of March 18, 1931 under Article No. 58.6,7,11 to 10 years. He was released on parole on 06/28/1931 after an aircraft inspection in the presence of Stalin. Amnestied by the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on 07/07/1931. In 1933-1938. head of the development of the I-15 and I-16, the design scheme of which formed the basis of almost all fighters of the 2nd World War. In 1938-1944 he designed a number of experimental military aircraft, including the I-17 and I-185 fighters. In 1940 received his doctorate without defending a dissertation. 10/28/1940 became the country's fourth Hero of Socialist Labor. During the war years, he designed a long-range bomber, a high-altitude fighter and a jet interceptor. Laureate of the Stalin Prizes (1941, 1943). Since 1943 lecturer at the Moscow Aviation Institute. Died 07/30/1944.
