Definition: Former major general of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the USSR Ministry of Defense (in 1988, by court verdict, he was deprived of his military rank and all state awards).

Genus. in 1921 in Ukraine. After graduating from high school in 1939. entered the artillery school. A participant in the Great Patriotic War, he fought on the Karelian and Western fronts. Awarded the Order of the Patriotic War and the Red Star. In the post-war years, he graduated from the Frunze Academy, General Staff courses, and was sent to the Main Intelligence Directorate. In the 1950s, he worked undercover as a UN employee in the United States. In 1961 he arrived in New York. A few months later, the youngest son fell ill and urgently needed an operation costing $5,000. He turned to the leadership of the GRU, but was refused to allocate the required amount. The baby died.In 1961, he independently proposed cooperation between the FBI and the CIA. Later he explained his action by ideological disagreement with the political regime in the USSR. During one of the interrogations, he stated that he wanted to “help Western democracy avoid the onslaught of Khrushchev’s military and foreign policy doctrine.”
In 1966 he was sent to work in Burma as the head of the Soviet Radio Interception Center, upon returning to the USSR he headed the Chinese direction in the work of the GRU, later he was sent as a resident to India, and in 1974 he received the rank of major general.
In 1980, due to health reasons, he retired. After retiring, he began working as a civilian in the GRU personnel department, gaining access to the personal files of all employees. Arrested in 1986. In 1988, by the verdict of the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR, he was sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out on March 15, 1988.
