Genus. in 1934 in Moscow. His father, German Adolf Davidovich, a teacher of English and German, died in Stalin’s camps after he was arrested on false charges of espionage in 1937. In 1952, he entered the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies (MIA) in the Indonesian language department. After the MIV was disbanded in 1954, he moved to the First Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, which he graduated in 1958 with a degree in English. From 1959 to 1966 (the period of Khrushchev's "thaw") he served a seven-year sentence in Mordovian camps under Article 70 of the Criminal Code (anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda). Despite a criminal record, in 1980 he was admitted to the Union of Writers of the USSR. The famous translator Nora Gal was one of those who recommended him to the Writers' Union.
