He graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology at Odessa University. He emigrated in the early 1920s. From 1926, he became a professor in the Department of Patrology at the Russian Institute of Theology in Paris. In 1932, he was ordained a priest. From 1948, he worked at the USSR Academy of Sciences and was dean of St. Vladimir's Seminary in New York. From 1956, he became a professor of Eastern Church History at Harvard University. He was one of the founders of the World Council of Churches.
