Waldgauer Oscar Ferdinandovich

Born in Vindava. His father was a doctor, his mother a pianist. He graduated from a classical gymnasium in Orel. He studied at the University of Munich (1900-1903) with Adolf Furtwängler. Professor at Leningrad University and the Academy of Arts.
From 1903 he worked at the Hermitage as a freelancer, without pay. In 1913 he was confirmed as the keeper of the Department of Antiquities. He taught Greek and art history at the former Reformed School. Since 1917, Waldgauer has held the position of head of the Department of Antiquities. In 1927-1928 he served as temporary director of the Hermitage.
The main works on the publication, attribution and systematization of ancient monuments stored in museums of the USSR were associated with current problems of Soviet art history of the 20-30s. (problem of realism, portrait). Waldgauer was among the first to introduce scientific methods for organizing museum exhibitions.
