Born in 1920 in Novgorod Oblast; father - Estonian, mother - Russian. In 1941 evacuated from Rostov Oblast to Altai. During mobilization in 1942, his nationality was indicated as German. Sent to the labor army (to the NKVD labor columns). Built the railway to Vorkuta. Rehabilitated by the Rostov Oblast Main Internal Affairs Directorate.
