Genus. in June 1901 in St. Petersburg in the family of a major political and public figure, historian Julius Isidorovich Gessen. from 1910 he studied at the Tenishevsky School in St. Petersburg. In 1917-1921 was a member of the RCP (b). In 1918 he entered the Faculty of History and Philology of Petrograd University. Having interrupted his studies, in 1919-1921. took part in the Civil War, served as a political instructor, and was captured during the defeat of the Red Army units by the Poles. After returning from captivity in 1922, he was arrested on suspicion of espionage for Poland. In 1922-1924. continued his studies at Petrograd University. From 1924 to 1927 – editor of historical literature at the State Publishing House (GIZ). In 1927-1929 – postgraduate student at the RANION Institute of History (Moscow).
In 1929-1934. – Associate Professor of the Belarusian State University, teacher. Arrested on March 8, 1933 for Trotskyist activities. Released on March 26, 1933. Rehabilitated by VT BelVO 05/09/1956.
After returning to Leningrad in 1934, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences and the Russian Museum. In June 1940 he was arrested and on June 16, 1940 convicted under Art. 16-58-7 for 8 (according to other sources - for 5) years. He served his sentence in Siberia, in Tomsk prison. After liberation in 1943, he remained in Tomsk. Since 1943 – Associate Professor of the Department of History of the Peoples of the USSR, Faculty of History and Philology, Tomsk State University.
At the end of his life, he headed the department of history of the USSR at the Pedagogical Institute in Syktyvkar. He died in 1963 in Syktyvkar.
