Genus. 10/27/1930 in Moscow in the family of a revolutionary arrested in 1935-1937, who died at the front. After the death of his father, he wandered, in 1946 he was arrested, sentenced to 7 years in prison, released for health reasons. He became a collective farmer of the Krasnaya Zvezda agricultural artel in Kubin, in 1952 - the first publication in the regional newspaper Sovetskaya Kuban. In 1954 he moved to Cherkessk, where in 1956 he published the first collection of poems, poems and translations. In 1956 he moved to Moscow, was engaged in literary works, translations, published in the capital's publications.In 1961, he published the novels "We Settle in the Earth" in the "Taurus Pages" (editor - Konstantin Paustovsky) and "A Man Lives" in the magazine "October".
In 1963 he became a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR, joined the editorial board of the magazine "October", from which he left in 1968 in protest against the entry of troops into Czechoslovakia. In 1971, "Seven Days of Creation" and in 1973 "Quarantine" were published in samizdat, 06/26/1973 was expelled from the Writers' Union for "for political views ... and ... creativity incompatible with the Charter of the Union of Writers of the USSR and the title of Soviet writer." In 1974, he received permission to travel to France with his wife, where he founded the quarterly magazine Continent, together with his wife Tatiana Viktorovna and one of the editors of the Chronicle of Current Events, Natalya Gorbanevskaya.
In 1990 he returned Soviet citizenship, often visited Moscow, wrote about political life. He died in Paris on March 26, 1995, and was buried in the Russian cemetery of Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois.
