Born January 18, 1934 in Leningrad; higher education - graduated from the literature department of the A. Herzen Pedagogical Institute. From 1955 to 1966 - teacher of literature and history in senior classes. Since 1966 - professional writer (main topic - populism and narodnikism), member of the writers' group at the Leningrad branch of the SSP. In 1974, he was arrested and sentenced under Art. 70 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR ("anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda") to 4 years in a labor camp and 2 years in exile for writing a preface to a samizdat collected works of I. Brodsky (the so-called "Maramzin collection"), as well as for the production in 1969 and "storage for the purpose of distribution" of 2 copies of A. Amalrik's essay "Will the Soviet Union Survive Until 1984?" and familiarization in 1971-1974 with this essay of three people, storage and summary of Fensond's book "Smolensk under Soviet Power". During the years of imprisonment, he wrote, transported from Dubravlag (Mordovian ASSR) and published in Paris three books of journalism, documentary prose and interviews ("Place and Time", "Russian Field", "Journey from Dubrovlag to Ermak"). After his release from exile in 1980, he emigrated to Israel. In 1982-1990 - research fellow at the Center for the Study and Documentation of East European Jewry at the University of Jerusalem. In parallel, he wrote and published seven books ("Looking from Jerusalem", "Regicide in 1918", "The Sad Scroll of Memories", etc.). In 1990-1998 - employee of the Israeli newspaper "Vesti". Died on November 25, 2019 in Jerusalem.
