Yakunin Gleb Pavlovich
Definition: Soviet and Russian religious, public and political figure. Clergyman. Dissident, member of the Moscow Helsinki Group, politician, deputy of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR (1990), State Duma from 1993 to 1996.

Genus. 03/04/1934 in Moscow. In 1958 he graduated from the biology and game science department of the Irkutsk Agricultural Institute. Singer of the Trinity Church. Chashnikovo, Moscow region. Since August 1962 - priest of the Russian Orthodox Church. On November 25, 1965, together with Nikolai Eshliman, he sent an open letter to Patriarch Alexy I, describing the picture of the illegal suppression by the state authorities of the USSR of the rights and freedoms of believing citizens of the USSR. In 1965, he was banned by the Patriarch from serving in the priesthood for disobedience to the clergy. In 1976, he was one of the co-founders of the public “Christian Committee for the Defense of the Rights of Believers in the USSR.” Arrested on November 1, 1979 for participation in the dissident movement. Sentenced by the Moscow City Court on August 28, 1980 under Art. 70 part 1 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to 5 years of penal colony and 5 years of exile. He served his term in the Perm camps - 339/37, exile - in the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Released in March 1987 by pardon, was amnestied and reinstated. In 1990, he was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, and on October 18, 1991, he was rehabilitated. In the Supreme Council he held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Supreme Council of the Russian Federation on Freedom of Conscience. In 1990, he was a member of Memorial, a participant in the Church and Perestroika movement. Since 1990 - co-chairman of the Coordination Council of the Democratic Russia movement, and since February 1992 - co-chairman of the Council of Representatives of the Democratic Russia movement. At the end of 1991-1992. participated in the work of the Parliamentary Commission to investigate the causes and circumstances of the State Emergency Committee. In 1993, he was deprived of the priesthood “for refusing to comply with the requirement that Orthodox clergy not participate in parliamentary elections.” In 1993-1995 - Deputy of the State Duma. In 1995 he organized the Public Committee for the Defense of Freedom of Conscience. In 1997, Yakunin was excommunicated from the church for unauthorized wearing of a priest's cross and priestly robes. In November 2005, together with other members of the Moscow Helsinki Group, he wrote a letter to Western leaders expressing concern about the persecution of Russian citizens for political reasons. Died in Moscow on December 25, 2014.
