Definition: American Slavist, critic, publicist, translator. Professor of Russian Literature at the University of Maryland. He also taught at Rutgers, the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa. Director of the J. Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies at the Woodrow Wilson Center (1982-1983).
