Daniil Plotke was born into an intelligent Jewish family from Shavli, which moved to Vilna shortly before his birth. Father - engineer Semyon Davidovich Plotke - was arrested in 1937 at a tractor factory in Chelyabinsk and died in custody; mother is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich, Elena (Hina) Arkadyevna Plotke.
He studied at the Faculty of Chemistry, then at the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University (graduated in 1936). Graduated from the Literary Institute named after. A.M. Gorky in 1941 and the same year he went to the front. Awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, II degree, and the Red Star.
Laureate of the All-Union Society "Knowledge" Prize (1962), Lomonosov Prize (1967); State Prize of the Russian Federation (1967). Since 1942 - member of the Union of Writers of the USSR. In 1993 he signed the “Letter of the 42”.
