Born in Kerch. He worked as a hydrologist-observer in the Kerch ichthyological laboratory and the Azov-Black Sea scientific and fishing expedition. in 1926 he moved to Leningrad and entered the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Leningrad State University. From 1927 until the end of his life he worked at the Leningrad Institute for the Study of the North.
