Genus. in 1869 in Vitebsk; Russian; from the nobles; higher education; participated in the Social Democratic movement, wavered between the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks, was constantly under police surveillance, acted as a defender of the socialists in many trials; in 1917 he joined the RSDLP(M) to represent it in the Provisional Government. He signed an order for the arrest of V.I. Lenin and himself warned him about it. Arrested along with other members of the Provisional Government on October 25 (November 7), 1917, sent to the Peter and Paul Fortress, a day later, like other socialist ministers, released. He retired from political activity and lived in Pyatigorsk and Yekaterinodar. He was arrested again in 1920. From September 1921 he lived in Moscow, worked as a legal adviser in the presidium of the Supreme Economic Council, for some time headed the Moscow College of Lawyers, was a member of the first composition of the presidium of the All-Russian College of Lawyers, and participated in the activities of the Political Red Cross. Arrested on December 12, 1930 in the case of the Union Bureau of the RSDLP(m), he was kept in Butyrka prison for several months; sentenced by the Kogpu on May 10, 1931 “for participation in a counter-revolutionary Menshevik organization” to 10 years in prison, but was released in May 1931 after the intercession of the Old Bolsheviks. In 1937 he participated in the filming of M. Romm’s film “Lenin in October” as a consultant for episodes related to the Provisional Government. Arrested again on November 2, 1937, held in Lubyanka, Lefortovo and Butyrskaya prisons, pleaded not guilty; sentenced by the Supreme Commissariat of the USSR Armed Forces on January 21, 1940 “for counter-revolutionary organizational activities” to VMN; shot 01/22/1940; burial place - Donskoye Cemetery in Moscow. Rehabilitated in the 1937 case by the Supreme Commissariat of the USSR Armed Forces on August 29, 1959.
