Genus. in 1860 in Tsarskoye Selo, St. Petersburg province; sixth son of Emperor Alexander II and his wife Empress Maria Alexandrovna. Due to a morganatic marriage unacceptable for the reigning house, he was abroad in 1902–1908. With the outbreak of World War I, he commanded the 1st Guards Cavalry Corps. Due to health reasons, from November 1916 he held the honorary position of Inspector General of the Guards Cavalry, which he remained in until his dismissal from the army in March 1917. Relations with Nicholas II were tense, since P.A. insisted on the establishment of a “Government of Trust” (in cooperation with the State Duma). Participation of son Vel. Book – Dmitry Pavlovich – the differences in the murder of Rasputin aggravated. During the days of the February Revolution, he visited the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo, at the same time trying to find a compromise with the State Duma with the possible adoption of the “Manifesto of the Grand Dukes” of 03/01/1917, which provided for the concession of some political rights in favor of the opposition. On March 31, 1917, he was dismissed from service and led a private life, lived in Tsarskoe Selo, and was not involved in politics. During the Kornilov rebellion - under house arrest by order of the Provisional Government. Arrested during the days of the October Revolution, released (possibly as a result of the petition of V.D. Bonch-Bruevich). When all the Grand Dukes were expelled, the chairman of the Petrograd Cheka, Uritsky, gave permission to the Great. Book P.A. stay in Petrograd. Proposals to flee the country P.A. rejected. Arrested on August 12, 1918 in Petrograd; sentenced by the Presidium of the Cheka on 01/09/1919 to VMN. 01/29/1919 transferred to the Peter and Paul Fortress. Shot on one of the nights of the last ten days of January 1919. Probably buried in a mass grave on the territory of Hare Island. Rehabilitated by the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation on June 09, 1999.
