Born in 1944 in Ufa. Russian historian and journalist. Graduated from the history department of Bashkir University and completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of History of the USSR of the USSR Academy of Sciences. After postgraduate studies, he worked at the Central State Archive of Ancient Acts (TsGADA, now RGADA) and other research institutions. Participated in collecting materials for the samizdat publication Chronicle of Current Events. Together with I. Kovalev and A. Smirnov, he published the bulletin "V", which in the early 1980s was the main source of information on the human rights movement in the USSR and was distributed in the West and in samizdat. In the fall of 1982, he was accused by the KGB of distributing anti-Soviet materials and deported from the USSR on September 10, 1982. As of 2013, he was the editor-in-chief of thematic programs of the Russian service of Radio Liberty. He died on August 25, 2024.
