Genus. in 1938 in Moscow. Studied at Moscow and Tbilisi universities. Graduated from Tbilisi University with a degree in physics. PhD. He worked as the head of a department at a research institute in Tbilisi. From 1969 to 1972 was the publisher of the samizdat magazine "Social Problems".
In 1970, together with A.D. Sakharov and A.N. Tverdokhlebov, he founded the Committee for the Protection of Human Rights. In 1972, he traveled to the United States by invitation to give lectures. During his stay in the United States, he was deprived of Soviet citizenship and remained in exile. Lived in the USA (Vermont). Together with Edward Klein, he founded the Chronicle Press magazine and publishing house in New York, which published books on human rights topics and, in particular, the samizdat bulletin “Chronicle of Current Events” about human rights activities in the USSR. Chalidze also created a publishing house of his own name, which published, in particular, documents from the archives of Leon Trotsky and other Soviet figures. In 1990, Soviet citizenship was returned. Died 01/03/2018.
