Genus. in Moscow in 1928. Arrested in 1949, exiled to Kazakhstan for 10 years. In 1951 he was arrested again, from 1952 to 1955 he was in the Leningrad prison psychiatric hospital. After rehabilitation, he graduated from the Pedagogical Institute and until 1968 taught literature in high school. In 1968, he signed a letter of protest against the trial of Ginzburg and Galanskov, for which he was fired from school, then reinstated, but did not return to school, but began to work as a literary and theater critic. He also performed some literary works for Moscow theaters. In 1975, during interrogation at the prosecutor’s office regarding his alleged participation in the production of a “samizdat” magazine, Aikhenvald suffered a heart attack, after which chronic heart disease began to interfere with his work.
In the sixties and seventies, he published two brochures and many articles in newspapers and magazines. Poetry and prose published abroad were distributed in samizdat.
