After the trial of Gamsakhurdia Z. and Kostava M., the “repentant” speech of Zviad Gamsakhurdia was shown on the USSR Central Television. American correspondents Piper H. and Whitney K. wrote in their articles that, according to people close to Z. Gamsakhurdia, his speech was falsified. On June 28, 1978, the USSR State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company filed a lawsuit against them in the Moscow City Court under Article 7 of the RSFSR Civil Code “Protection of honor and dignity.” The trial took place in Moscow on July 18, 1978.
The journalists gave written explanations on the merits of the issue, but did not appear at the court hearing. The court ordered G. Piper and K. Whitney to publish a refutation of the substance of their articles within five days in the Baltimore Sun and the New York Times or in the Soviet press and charged them with legal costs. The newspaper paid $1,700 in legal fees but refused to print a retraction.
