Born into a noble family. In 1923 he graduated from the law faculty of Moscow University. From his student years he collected a collection of old printed publications, manuscripts (including genealogies), portraits (over 13 thousand), etc. In 1924-30 he worked in the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department, then as a legal adviser in the People's Commissariat of Agriculture. Participated in the activities of the Society for the Study of the Russian Estate; one of the authors of the publication “Monuments of Manor Art. I. Moscow district "(1928). In 1933-56 he was repressed. In 1958 he returned to Moscow, lived in house 15 on Gagarinsky Lane. Since the 1960s led the local history circle at the M. Gorky Library of Moscow State University. According to his will, he was buried in the town of Kirsanov, Tambov Region.
