S. S. Ganeshin was born in Moscow on November 26, 1879. He studied at the natural sciences department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow University, graduated in 1902, after which he was left at the faculty to prepare for the professorship. He studied with Professor Ivan Nikolaevich Gorozhankin.Since 1905, Sergei Sergeevich worked at the New Alexandria Institute of Agriculture and Forestry as an assistant. In 1911 he moved to St. Petersburg, becoming an assistant at the St. Petersburg University and Forestry Institute. Since 1913, Ganeshin was also an employee of the Botanical Museum of the Academy of Sciences.
In 1909, S.S. Ganeshin went on an expedition to the Angaro-Ilimsk region, and in 1914 to the Ulutau ridge. Sergei Sergeevich was a professor at the Leningrad Agricultural Institute, as well as associate professors at Leningrad University. Between 1921 and 1926, the scientist led a series of studies in the area of the Volkhov and Ilmen valleys, carried out with the aim of preparing the construction of the Volkhov hydroelectric station.
In 1930, he headed the botanical detachment of the Kola Expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On the last day of the detachment’s field work, August 30, 1930, on Mount Vudyavrchorr, he got lost in the fog, followed by a snowstorm. Died from sudden cardiac arrest
