Yuri (Georgy) Mikhailovich Edelshtein was born on July 20, 1932 in the town of Ovruch near Kiev. Priest, archpriest, participant in the dissident movement in the USSR. Member of the Moscow Helsinki Group. Born into a family of mixed origin (Jewish, Polish roots). As a young man, about 20 years old, he was baptized. He sought ordination for a long time. Head of the department of foreign languages, he graduates from the Moscow Theological Seminary and goes to distant rural parishes. Only on November 24, 1979, he was ordained to the rank of priest, after which, by the decision of the administrator of the Kursk and Belgorod diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, Chrysostom was appointed rector of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in the village of Korovino, Volokonovsky district. In 1965, Edelstein, while still a layman and a graduate student at the Moscow Regional Pedagogical Institute, participated in editing the text of an open letter to Patriarch Alexy I, which painted a detailed picture of the illegal suppression of the rights and freedoms of religious citizens of the country by the government authorities of the USSR. As a result, the priests Nikolai Ashliman and Gleb Yakunin, who signed the letter, were dismissed from the staff “with a ban on priestly service until complete repentance” “for activities harmful to the Church and tempting.” The son of Georgy Edelstein, Yuli Edelstein, was an activist in the Jewish movement for the right to emigrate from the USSR, one of the creators of an underground network for studying Hebrew. In 1987 he immigrated to Israel, since 2009 he has been the Minister of Information and Diaspora of Israel. Since 1992 Georgy is the rector of the church in the village of Karabanovo, Kostroma region. Archpriest. He denounced the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church accused of collaborating with the KGB. Author of the book “Notes of a Country Priest” (Moscow, 2005).
