Genus. in 1930 in Odessa. Graduated from the Faculty of History of Moscow State University in 1953. He worked as the director of a secondary school in the city of Stalinsk. He was a traveling special correspondent for Literaturnaya Gazeta and Komsomolskaya Pravda. Published in “New World”, “Young Communist”, “Questions of Literature” and “Questions of Philosophy”. He studied the history of Slavophilism. Defended his dissertation “Slavophiles and Konstantin Leontiev. Degeneration of Russian nationalism. 1839-1891". He wrote the 2,000-page “History of the Political Opposition in Russia,” which, despite its length, was widely distributed in samizdat.
Left the USSR in October 1974 under pressure from the KGB. He emigrated to the USA, where since 1975 he taught Russian history and political science at the universities of Texas (Austin), California (Berkeley), Berkeley, Michigan (Ann Arbor), New York (CUNY). He went through the entire American academic ladder - from instructor to full professor. Doctor of Historical Sciences. Most recent position: Professor of Political Science at the Graduate School of the City University of New York.
