Before emigrating in 1971, he lived and worked (as a design engineer) in Moscow. Since 1971 he has been living in England, where he became (apart from periodic engagements as a technical translator) a humanist and worked as a teacher at a higher educational institution for fifteen years (Faculty of Russian and Soviet Studies). In 1976, he published the book "A Necessary Conversation with Solzhenitsyn", where he talks about the events in which he was involved together with Solzhenitsyn, about the role of Solzhenitsyn and other participants in them, as well as about some of the consequences and lessons of these events.
