In 1927 graduated from the Faculty of Fine Letters of the University of Bordeaux and entered the service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1929 sent to cultural attaché at the French Embassy in Tallinn. For his pro-Soviet positions he was accused of having connections with the Comintern. After the return of Estonia, the USSR refused to return to France. Sent a telegram to de Gaulle about his support. Led the French Alliance in Tallinn. In July 1941 arrested by the NKVD and interned in response to the arrests of Soviet citizens in France. He was held in Gorky and Aktyubinsk. After the USSR recognized de Gaulle's movement and exchanged diplomatic representatives with it in August 1942. released. He joined the Communist Party personally from M. Thorez in Moscow. Since 1944 - Head of the Information Department at the French Embassy in the USSR. Until 1972 he lived in the USSR. In France he translated Solzhenitsyn, Sholokhov, Nabokov, Rybakov. Died in 1991 in Paris.
