Genus. in 1927 in Alytus (Lithuania); graduated from the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute in 1955, AON under the CPSU Central Committee in 1963, since 1942 he worked as a carpenter and turner at a military plant in Votkinsk, Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic; from 1944 - at Komsomol work: instructor, head of sector, secretary of the Vilkaviskis Komsomol committee; since 1945 - propagandist of the Vilkaviskis Party Committee, student of the Republican Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania; from 1946 - propagandist, head of the party office - deputy head of the department of the Vilkaviskis regional party committee; in 1947-1949 he again studied at the Republican Party School, was an instructor, head of a sector of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania; since 1956 - head of department of the Vilnius city party committee; since 1963 - senior researcher at the Institute of Party History under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania; since 1969 - head of the department at the Vilnius Institute of Civil Engineering; since 1976 - professor of the department of the Vilnius State Pedagogical Institute; from December 1989 - secretary, from March 1990 - first secretary of the provisional Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania (on the platform of the CPSU); from April 1990 - First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania (CPSU); after August 1991 - underground, lived in Russia and Belarus; was arrested in Minsk by the Lithuanian authorities, accused of involvement in the January 1991 events in Vilnius, treason and conspiracy to overthrow the state system of Lithuania.
