After his father's arrest in 1937 and his mother's expulsion from Leningrad, he was taken with his sister by his father's parents at the age of 4 months and raised by his aunt. He graduated from the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute and worked at shipbuilding enterprises in Leningrad-Saint Petersburg.
