One of the first researchers of the Tunguska phenomenon and the author of publications on meteoritics.

In 1921, on the initiative of Leonid Kulik, the Meteorite Department was created at the Mineralogical Museum. With the support of academicians V. I. Vernadsky and A. E. Fersman, together with his university friend P. L. Dravert, he organized the first scientific meteorite expedition in Soviet Russia to verify reports of meteorites falling on the country's territory received by the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) in Petrograd. The expedition was carried out in Siberia (in the eastern part of the Yenisei province, in the Omsk and Altai provinces) and the Saratov province, from May 19, 1921 to November 29, 1922. During the trip, Kulik showed particular interest in studying the location and circumstances of the fall of the unique Tunguska meteorite in the Podkamennaya Tunguska River basin.

In 1939, after the organization of the Committee on Meteorites at the USSR Academy of Sciences, Leonid Kulik became its first scientific secretary.
