Born in 1928 in Leningrad. After his father's arrest, on 26.04.1938 he was administratively exiled from Leningrad with his mother and younger brother to the Voronezh region. After finishing school, he entered the Baku Naval Preparatory School, then the Frunze Higher Naval School in   Leningrad. Naval officer. After demobilization he worked as a photojournalist.
