Voronoi Georgy Feodosievich

Definition: famous Russian mathematician of Ukrainian origin.
Years of life: 1868-1908

Born in the village of Zhuravki, Poltava province (now Chernigov region).
Since 1889 he studied at St. Petersburg University with Andrei Markov.
In 1894 he defended his master's thesis “On integers depending on the root of an equation of the third degree.” In the same year he was elected professor at the University of Warsaw, where he studied continued fractions. Waclaw Sierpinski studied with Voronoi.
In 1897 he defended his doctoral dissertation “On a generalization of the continued fraction algorithm”, which was awarded the Bunyakovsky Prize.
He died in his native village from cholelithiasis.
