Genus. in 1890 in St. Petersburg. in the family of an employee; Russian; higher education (graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1912; b/p. In 1912–1917 he worked at the Main Geophysical Observatory. In 1917–1921 – participant of the Northern Hydrographic Expedition, conducted scientific research in the Kara and Barents Seas. In 1918–1920 – in reserve of the White Army in Arkhangelsk. He taught theoretical mechanics and physics at the technical faculties of the Naval Academy of the Red Army, Petrograd State University and the Naval Hydrographic School (1921–1942), at the department of theoretical mechanics of the Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics (1937–1941 ) In 1925–1937 - director of the Bureau of General Magnetic Survey of the USSR. In 1929, he headed the newly created department of analytical mechanics, head of the department of magnetometry in 1932–1942. In 1932, he was appointed the first director of the Central Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism and Atmospheric Electricity of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Organized and successfully carried out general geomagnetic survey of the USSR, which served as the basis for the construction of magnetic maps of the USSR. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in the section of applied physics (geophysics) without defending a dissertation, professor (1935). Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad State University (1942). In 1942 - in Leningrad. Arrested 01/31/1942. Charged under Art. 58-3, 58-10 part 2, 58-11. Died during the investigation. On 04/23/1942 the case was closed. Rehabilitated by VT LVO 2012.1954.
