Vavilov Nikolay Ivanovich
Born in 1887 in Moscow; Russian; higher education; biologist, geneticist. Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences and VASKhNIL, president of the USSR Civil Defense. Director of the All-Union Institute of Plant Growing. Lived in Leningrad (25 Oktyabrya Ave., 11/2, apt. 13). Arrested on 08/06/1940. Sentenced to capital punishment by the Military Commission of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 07/09/1941 on charges of participating in an anti-Soviet organization, sabotage, and espionage. On 06/23/1942 the capital punishment was replaced by 20 years of imprisonment (decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR). He died in Saratov prison on 01/26/1943. Rehabilitated in 1955 and reinstated in the USSR Academy of Sciences.
