Russian and Soviet theoretical physicist. Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1933), Professor (1921), Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences honoris causa (1934).
Genus. in 1890 in St. Petersburg; Higher education - graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg University. From 1918 he worked at the Polytechnic Institute, giving lectures on physics. Since 1921 - professor at Petrograd University. Since 1922, Chairman of the Physics Department of the Russian Physico-Chemical Society. 12/30/1936 arrested in the Pulkovo case. Sentenced on May 25, 1937 to 10 years in labor camp. Sent to Kansk camps. In conclusion, he continued his scientific work, worked in the “sharashka” with A.N. Tupolev. and S.P. Korolev. Released in 1947. Returned to the university, professor at the Leningrad State Order of Lenin University in theoretical mechanics. Laureate of the Stalin Prize for work on atomic physics in 1952. Rehabilitated in 1957.
