Idelson Naum Ilyich
Astronomer, specialist in celestial mechanics, and historian of astronomy
Born in 1885 in St. Petersburg. Graduated from the Law (1909) and Physics and Mathematics (1911) faculties of St. Petersburg University. In 1907-1916 - assistant to an attorney, attorney. From 1918 - research associate of the Astronomy Department of the P.F. Lesgaft Research Institute, in 1918-1926 - teacher at the Military Topographic School. From 1919 - employee of the State Computing Institute, from 1923 to 1931 - head of the Astrometric Department and deputy director of the institute. In 1920-1926 - head of the Petrograd branch of the Pulkovo Computing Department. In 1930-1937, 1944-1951 Professor of the Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics, Head of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics in 1931-1949. In 1931 he worked in the theoretical sector of the Pulkovo Observatory, and since 1934 he was the head of this sector. He was arrested on 10.02.1937 under the "Pulkovo Affair". He was released in 1939. Since 1939 - at the Astronomical Institute, in the position of head of the ephemeris service department. In 1940-1943 he was the editor-in-chief of the "Astronomical Yearbook of the USSR". In December 1941 he was evacuated to Kazan. In 1941-1944 he was an employee of the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1942-1944 he was a professor at Kazan University, head of the geophysics department. Since 1946 - head of the astrometric department at the Pulkovo Observatory.
