Born 25.12.1886 in St. Petersburg, in the family of a doctor. Graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of St. Petersburg University. Until 1919 he taught physics at the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute, from 1919 - at Leningrad State University, professor (1932), head of the Department of Theoretical Physics, dean of the Physics Department (1933), director of the Research Physics Institute at Leningrad State University (1934), founded in 1933, where an electrometry laboratory was created. Employee of various geophysical divisions of the Geological Committee of the Central Research Geological Prospecting Institute, organizer and head of electrical exploration work. In 1928-1933 - participant in a number of expeditions (Urals, West Siberian Lowland, Kuzbass, Kuznetsk Alatau, Caspian Lowland, Baku). Arrested on 15 October 1936 (according to other sources, 08 October 1936), accused of belonging to a "counter-revolutionary fascist organization" that had terrorist goals and was preparing an assassination attempt on Stalin (the geophysical branch of the "Pulkovo case"). Sentenced by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR on 25 May 1937 under Article 58-8-10-11 to 10 years' imprisonment. Sentenced to work in the Special Technical Bureau of the NKVD ("Kresty"), where he was engaged in thermal calculations for guns. With the outbreak of World War II, he was evacuated to the city of Molotov (Perm) together with the OKB. In May 1945 he returned to Leningrad. On 15 December 1945 he died in a prison hospital from kidney disease. Rehabilitated by the determination of the Military Commission of the Supreme Court of the USSR on 08 December 1956.
