Mikhoels Solomon Mikhailovich
Theatre actor and director. Honored Artist of the Republic (1926), People's Artist of the RSFSR (1935),
People's Artist of the USSR (1939)
Born in 1890 in Dvinsk. From 1911 he studied at the Kiev Commercial Institute, expelled for participating in student unrest, in 1915-1918 he studied at the law faculty of St. Petersburg University. In 1919 he began working as an actor at the State Jewish Chamber Theater in Petrograd under the direction of A.M. Granovsky. In 1920, the theater moved to Moscow and received the status of the Moscow State Jewish Chamber Theater (since 1925 - Moscow State Jewish Theater (GOSET)). From 1928 - artistic director of the theater. He taught at the Moscow State Jewish Theater School, organized at the theater in 1930, and starred in a number of films. From 1941 - Chairman of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (EAK). On 13.01.1948 he was killed in Minsk by MGB officers, his death was disguised as a traffic accident. He was buried at the New Donskoye Cemetery in Moscow. That same year, the Jewish Anti-Corruption Committee was disbanded, and the following year, the Moscow State Anti-Corruption Committee was closed.
