Genus. 03/10/1930, village. Vazhatkemis, Prienai region, Lithuania, in a peasant family. Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Vilnius University (1954). He was a member of the CPSU since 1957. He was the secretary of the board of the Lithuanian Writers' Union, then deputy chairman of the Union of Lithuanian Writers. Participated in the leadership of Sąjūdis. Full member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded Soviet orders and the Order of Vytautas the Great, the Order of Gediminas I and III degrees, the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR (1957, 1969) and the Santarve Prize (Concord, Santarvės premija, 1994). Died on February 16, 2011 in Vilnius.
