Born in 1886 in Kursk; Russian; higher education; member of the RSDLP since 1904. Mineralogist, Doctor of Sciences, professor, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1933). Lived and worked in Moscow. One of the founders of the Moscow Mining Academy. Organizer and first director of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Mineral Resources (VIMS). Arrested on 25 October 1937 on charges of participating in an anti-Soviet organization. Expelled from the Academy of Sciences on 29 April 1938. Sentenced on 26 April 1939 by the Military Commission of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR under Articles 58-1a, 7, 8, 11 to 15 years in a correctional labor camp, followed by disqualification of rights for 5 years. Until 1942 in Vorkutlag, then transferred to Moscow, to the Fertilizer Institute (laboratory of the IV Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, sharashka). In 1944 he was transferred to Krasnoyarsk, then to Norilsk, where he taught mineralogy at the geological technical school, then worked at the Norilsk plant as an unescorted prisoner. In 1951 he was again placed in Norillag for general work. He was released on 25.10.1952, and in March 1953 he was dismissed for health reasons and "activated". He was rehabilitated on 24.04.1954. His daughter moved him to Moscow. He was reinstated in the USSR Academy of Sciences with the rank of corresponding member on 02.02.1955. He died on 27.08.1956. He was buried at the New Donskoy Cemetery.
