Born in 1946 in Leningrad. Graduated from the Theater Institute. Due to his independent socio-political position, he was forced to retire from professional work. He served as a postman and watchman.Wrote articles on cultural issues. Since 1977, he was published (sometimes under the pseudonym V. Azaryan) in the magazine “37”. In May 1981, he emigrated with his family to the United States. In 1991 he received a doctorate in Russian literature from the University of California, Los Angeles. He taught Russian at the University of Oklahoma.
