Born in 1915 in the village of Sotskoye (now Taldomsky district of Moscow region) in the family of a furrier.

He began publishing in 1934. He was arrested on 29.12.1934. He was sentenced under Article 58-10 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to 15 years in a labor camp. On 11.03.1935 he was transferred to the city of Svobodny of the BAMLag. He worked on the construction of roads and an oil pipeline. In March 1937 he was released early. He remained a civilian worker in the Far East. From 1939 to 1944 he studied at the correspondence department of the A. M. Gorky Literary Institute. In 1948 he published a collection of stories called Gold. He was a member of the Writers' Union of the USSR since 1947. From 1954 until his death he was a member of the board of the Writers' Union of the USSR. He was the editor-in-chief of the magazine Soviet Literature. He died on 27.04.1968 in Moscow.
