V. Volodarsky (present name Moisei Markovich Goldstein) 1891-1918. Bolshevik, in 1917, participated in the preparation and conduct of the October armed coup and the overthrow of the Russian government. In 1918, Volodarsky became commissar of the Union of Northern Communes for press, propaganda and agitation, as well as one of the main organizers of Bolshevik rallies in Petrograd, at which he called for a merciless fight against the enemies of the revolution through terror. As press commissar, Volodarsky initiated the destruction of not only those print publications that criticized the Bolsheviks, but also those that tried to be neutral. According to fellow Bolshevik Lunacharsky, “he was... merciless... Volodarsky was a terrorist. He was convinced to the depths of his soul that if we delay with steel blows to the head of the counter-revolutionary hydra, it will not only devour us, but with us the world hopes that awoke in October.” Volodarsky was killed under unclear circumstances on the way to a rally. June 20, 1918. The Bolsheviks accused the Socialist-Revolutionary Sergeev of his murder. Some historians have put forward the theory that Volodarsky was actually killed by fellow Bolshevik Party members for embezzling large sums of unaccountable party money.
A dead end in Ryazan is named after Volodarsky.
