Born in 1885 in the city of Thann (Alsace). Graduated from the history and philology department of the St. Petersburg University. Historian of European literature, professor at the Yenukidze Oriental Institute. Lived in Leningrad, Dekabristov Street, Building 53, Apt. 12. Arrested on January 5, 1934 in the "Slavists' Case". Sentenced to 10 years in a labor camp. Imprisoned in Ukhtpechlag. Sentenced by a troika of the Arkhangelsk Region NKVD on January 4, 1938 under Article 58-6-10 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to capital punishment. Executed on February 27, 1938. Place of burial: Novaya Ukhtarka, Komi ASSR.
