Before the October Revolution of 1917 joined the Left Social Revolutionaries. After October he offered his services to the Soviet government. October 28 (November 10), 1917 appointed chief of defense of Petrograd, and on October 30 (November 12) - commander-in-chief of the troops operating against the troops of Kerensky - Krasnov (see Kerensky - Krasnov rebellion). During the period of the fight against Kaledinism, M. was the chief of staff of V. A. Antonov-Ovseenko. At the beginning of 1918 commanded a group of Red Guard detachments directed against the counter-revolutionary Ukrainian Central Rada, and then boyar Romania. From June 13, 1918 Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Front. After the Left Socialist Revolutionary rebellion of 1918. in Moscow, M. betrayed Soviet power and on July 10 raised a rebellion in Simbirsk. Killed during armed resistance to arrest.
