Historian, orientalist, Arabist, and Islamic scholar. General Director of the State Hermitage Museum (since 1992), Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at St. Petersburg State University, and member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Doctor of Historical Sciences (1985), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2000).
