Harry Pollitt was born on November 22, 1890 into a working-class family, his father was a blacksmith. There were six children in the family, Harry was the second.In 1906 Pollitt joined the Independent Labor Party, and from 1912 he was a member of the British Socialist Party. He was one of the organizers of the “Hands Off Russia” movement, aimed against anti-Soviet intervention.
He is also one of the founders of the Communist Party of Great Britain (1920). From 1922 a member of the Central Committee and the Politburo of the Central Committee, from 1943 a member of the Executive Committee and the Political Committee of the party. In 1929-1939 (in 1939 he was replaced as Secretary General by R.P. Dutt, because he hastened to declare the imperialist war (declared by Great Britain on Germany with the entry of the latter into Poland) anti-fascist, and returned to the post with the actual onset of the latter with the German attack on the USSR) and 1941-1956-ies General Secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain (resigned from the post of Secretary General with the suppression of the Hungarian uprising of 1956, more than 7 thousand members then left the ranks of the party), in 1956-1960-ies he became Chairman of the Party Executive Committee. He headed the delegations of the Communist Party of Great Britain at the XIX, XX and XXI Congresses of the CPSU. He did not accept Khrushchev’s criticism of Stalin at the 20th Congress.
From 1924 to 1943 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Comintern.
He died on June 27, 1960 on his way from Australia to Great Britain.
