Definition: Soviet politician, leader of the international social democratic and communist movement; in 1919-1924 member of the Central Committee of the RCP (b); in 1920-1924 member (in 1920 - secretary) of the Executive Committee of the Comintern, employee of the newspapers "Pravda" and "Izvestia"; author of the term “National Bolshevism”

Since 1923 - an active supporter of L.D. Trotsky. In 1927, he was expelled from the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) and by a Special Meeting at the OGPU he was sentenced to 4 years of exile and exiled to Krasnoyarsk. In 1930, together with E. A. Preobrazhensky, A. G. Beloborodov and I. T. Smilga, he sent a letter to the Central Committee, where he declared an “ideological and organizational break with Trotskyism.” In the same year he was reinstated in the party. Translated into Russian “Mein Kampf” by A. Hitler (1932). In 1936 he was again expelled from the CPSU (b), and arrested on September 16, 1936. As one of the main accused, he was brought to the open trial in the case of the “Parallel Anti-Soviet Trotskyist Center” (Second Moscow Trial). On January 30, 1937, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Sent to the Verkhneuralsk political prison, where he was killed on May 19, 1939. In 1988 he was posthumously rehabilitated.
