Genus. in 1896 in St. Petersburg in a Jewish family, the father was a businessman. He studied at the 10th St. Petersburg gymnasium and was a member of a revolutionary circle. In 1914 he joined the RSDLP. He began his revolutionary activities in the Narva district of Petrograd - at the hospital fund of the Putilov plant. In September 1915 he was mobilized and sent to the Northern Front. In December 1915, released from the front on leave, he came to Petrograd, where he was arrested for revolutionary propaganda at the front. He was imprisoned in the Kresty prison. Released from prison during the February Revolution. Sent to Kronstadt, where in March 1917 he was elected chairman of the city committee of the RSDLP (b) and a member of the executive committee of the Kronstadt Council. He played a key role in attracting Baltic sailors to the side of the Bolsheviks. In July 1917, he was arrested by the Kerensky government along with L. D. Trotsky, F. F. Raskolnikov and others and again imprisoned in the “Crosses”. Released on October 26 (November 8), 1917 during the October Revolution. In October 1917 - commissar of the combined detachment of soldiers and sailors during the suppression of the Kerensky-Krasnov speech near Petrograd. Participant in the capture of the Supreme Commander's Headquarters and the murder of General N. N. Dukhonin.In December 1917, Lenin sent him as a commissar of the Council of People's Commissars to the Romanian Front to organize a front-line military revolutionary committee. During negotiations with the front commander, General D. G. Shcherbachev, he was arrested by the Romanian authorities on charges of preparing an uprising in the Russian colony in Iasi. On December 8 (21), 1917, he was handed over to members of a secret officer organization operating on the Romanian front, and was the last to be killed under unclear circumstances.
