Genus. in 1870 in Odessa; Jew; studied at the Odessa gymnasium, expelled from the 5th grade in 1886 “for inability” in the Greek language”; attended lectures at the Sorbonne and College de France; social democrat, Marxist. Before the revolution, he was repeatedly subjected to administrative and criminal prosecution. Member of the RCP(b)–VKP(b) in 1917–1931, director of the Marx and Engels Institute, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He did not belong to the opposition, but helped victims of political repression. In 1931 he lived in Moscow; arrested 02/16/1931; sentenced by the OS under the NKVD of the USSR on April 16, 1931 under Art. 58-4 to 3 years of exile in Saratov; On 12/13/1933 the OS KOGPU was sentenced to extend his exile for another 2 years, as well as to be prohibited from living in the Moscow and Leningrad regions for 2 years. In 1931–1937 he lived in Saratov, worked as a scientific consultant at the history department of Saratov University and in the university library; arrested 07/23/1937; sentenced by the visiting session of the Supreme Court of the USSR Armed Forces on January 21, 1938 under Art. 58-8, 58-11 to VMN; executed on January 21, 1938; burial place - Saratov, presumably - Resurrection Cemetery. Rehabilitated by the Supreme Commander of the USSR Armed Forces in cases of 1931 and 1933 on 03/22/1958.
